"What the hell, New York Times?!"

(BrettM. Kavanaugh),

Democratic presidential candidates on Sunday demanded that SupremeCourt Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh be investigated or impeached inresponse to a new allegation that he exposed himself to a femaleclassmate at a drunken dorm party years ago at Yale University.

The allegation surfaced Saturday night in a New York Times report.A classmate, Max Stier, said he saw Kavanaugh with his pants downat the party, where friends pushed Kavanaugh’s penis into the youngwoman’s hand, the Times reported.

Later, she said, she was on the floor, foggy and slurring herwords.

“I remember a penis being in front of my face,” she said. ...andthe other students laughing at her confusion and taunting her, oneencouraging her to “kiss it.”

She said that she pushed the person away, touching it in theprocess. Ramirez, who was raised a devout Catholic, in Connecticut, said that she was shaken. “I wasn’t going to touch a penis until Iwas married,” she said. “I was embarrassed and ashamed andhumiliated.”

She remembers Kavanaugh standing to her right and laughing, pullingup his pants. “Brett was laughing,” she said. “I can still see hisface, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up yourpants.”

She recalled another male student shouting about the incident.“Somebody yelled down the hall, ‘Brett Kavanaugh just put his penisin Debbie’s face,’ ” she said.

“Having a penis thrust in your face at a drunken dorm partymay

seemlike harmless fun

. But when Brett Kavanaugh did it to her,Deborah Ramirez says, it confirmed that she didn’t belong at Yalein the first place.”“

What thehell, New York Times?!?!

(via@nytopinion)

@JessicaValenti:

The @nytimes has deleted this, saying it was “poorly phrased,” butthis is not about the wrong choice of words - it’s the constantdiminishment and laughing off of women’s pain.

@ChrisPeleoLazar:

I feel like the New York Times has done this repeatedly. Theydownplay the hostility out there for women and almost make it ajoke.

@SuzBell3:

Is the NYT so immersed in rape culture that it’s undermining itsown writers and its own reporting?

@NotThatTherese:

POORLY PHRASED? There’s no possible good way to phrase thatstinking garbage. Good lord.

(via Twitter)
